Managing caring responsibilities alongside a job
Several forms of support exist for working carers, and most of them have to be asked for rather than offered.
Start with what the employer already provides. Many have an employee assistance programme that includes care referrals, and flexible or hybrid arrangements are more widely available than policies suggest. Both are usually requested rather than advertised.
Federal job-protected leave covers caring for a spouse, child or parent with a serious health condition, for employees who meet the service conditions at covered employers. Several states run paid programmes with broader definitions of family.
Area Agencies on Aging provide respite care, adult day services and carer support groups, and will assess what is available locally at no charge. Many states also operate programmes that pay a family carer in defined circumstances.
Document the arrangement with your employer in writing, including any adjusted hours. Carer arrangements agreed verbally with a sympathetic manager tend not to survive that manager moving on.
