Changing field in your forties or fifties
The obstacles are usually practical rather than attitudinal, and most of them have established workarounds.
The common concern is that existing experience counts for nothing. In practice much of it transfers, and the work is in describing it in the new field's vocabulary rather than in acquiring it again from the beginning.
The genuine constraints are usually income continuity and the cost of retraining. Phased approaches address both: part-time study while working, employer tuition support, or moving to an adjacent role in the target sector before moving fully.
Credit for prior learning can remove a substantial amount of time from a qualification by converting experience and existing certifications into academic credit. It is unevenly offered and has to be asked about by name.
Age discrimination is unlawful above a defined age for covered employers, though it is difficult to prove at the application stage. Practical responses include limiting dated detail on a résumé and building the network that bypasses open applications altogether.
