The paperwork that carries a deadline when you move
Most of a move is logistics. A short list of items carries actual deadlines, and those are the ones that cause trouble later.
Address changes with government bodies come first, because other things key off them: the postal service forwarding order, driving licence and vehicle registration, which carry state deadlines measured in days or weeks after establishing residency, and voter registration, which has its own cutoff before each election.
Benefits and insurance follow. Programmes administered by states generally need a transfer or a fresh application when you cross a state line rather than a simple address change, and health plans sold on an exchange treat a move as a qualifying event that opens a limited enrolment window. Missing that window means waiting.
Schools require proof of residency for enrolment and a records transfer from the previous school, and enrolment can usually begin before the move completes. Starting that early avoids a gap in attendance.
Keep the deposit evidence from both ends: documented condition at move-out and move-in, with dates. Most deposit disputes are decided on evidence nobody collected at the time.
