Having a useful conversation about money at home
The conversation fails for structural reasons more often than emotional ones, and the structure can be changed.
Conversations held in the moment, after a bill arrives or a purchase is discovered, are about blame rather than planning. A scheduled conversation at a fixed interval, with nothing specific triggering it, is a different conversation entirely.
Bringing the actual figures rather than impressions removes most of the disagreement, because much of it turns out to be about different assumptions rather than different priorities.
Agreeing a threshold above which purchases are discussed, and below which they are not, resolves a great deal. The number matters less than having one, because it converts a standing source of friction into a rule.
Where debts or obligations have not been disclosed, that is a larger conversation and sometimes one for a non-profit credit counsellor, who can act as a neutral party and advise at little or no cost.
