Insurance cover people frequently already hold

Several kinds of cover arrive attached to something else, and are commonly paid for twice.

Employer benefits often include life cover, disability cover and sometimes legal or identity protection services. These are easy to forget because nothing arrives each year to remind you; the annual enrolment summary is where they are listed.

Credit cards frequently carry travel accident cover, rental vehicle cover and purchase protection. The terms sit in the benefits guide for that specific card, and buying the rental counter's own waiver without checking is the most common duplication.

Home and renter policies often extend to belongings away from the property and to liability outside it, which overlaps with cover sold separately for particular items.

Membership organisations, unions and professional associations sometimes include legal helplines or limited accident cover. None of this is a reason to drop cover you need, but knowing what is already held avoids paying for it twice.

What to do next. Read your employer's benefits summary and your card's benefits guide before buying any cover separately.

Nothing here is a determination. We cannot tell you what you qualify for, and no website can. The programme and the office that runs it decide that, after you apply.
