What a household budget needs to contain

Most budgets fail for the same two reasons, and neither of them has much to do with discipline.

The first reason is that irregular expenses are left out. Insurance, vehicle registration, school costs and annual subscriptions do not arrive monthly, so a budget built from a single month's bank statement misses them and breaks the first time one lands.

The remedy is to list everything that occurs across a full year, divide the total by twelve, and treat that figure as a monthly cost even though the payment is not monthly. It makes the budget less flattering and considerably more accurate.

The second reason is that there is no category for ordinary unplanned spending. A plan with no slack in it records every normal week as a failure, which is the point at which most people stop using it.

A workable budget is therefore shorter than most templates: fixed costs, annualised irregular costs, a set amount for saving, and the remainder available to spend without further tracking.

What to do next. List a full year of expenses, divide by twelve, and leave a category for ordinary unplanned spending.
