The bills that arrive before any aid does

Equipment, deposits, travel and setting up somewhere to live land together and usually before money disburses.

Aid is normally disbursed after a term begins and after enrolment is confirmed, while the costs of starting arrive before that. The gap is a common point of difficulty even for people whose year is otherwise fully funded, and it has nothing to do with the size of the award.

Ask the school two specific questions: when aid actually reaches you, and what it offers for the interval. Many institutions have something — a short-term loan, a book voucher, a deferred payment arrangement, an emergency fund — and almost none of it is advertised.

Books and equipment are where the most slack sits. The required list is usually published before term, and editions, rentals, library copies and second-hand stock vary the cost substantially. Pricing the list yourself beats accepting a bundled estimate.

Where a genuine emergency arises mid-year, most institutions have a hardship fund. It is applied for through student services or the aid office, and it exists precisely for this.

What to do next. Ask when aid disburses and what the school offers for the gap, and price the book list yourself.
studentaid.gov outranks this page. Rules, figures and dates change between academic years. This is written to help you read the official sources, not to stand in front of them. Start there.
Nothing here is a determination. We cannot tell you what you qualify for, and no website can. The programme and the office that runs it decide that, after you apply.
